The holidays are here which means the New Year is swiftly approaching. Have you reflected on this past year, your current goals and expectations in the year to come? Creating and sticking with New Year’s resolutions are easily made, yet easily avoided. In order to make the “New Year, New You,” stick, try our suggestions.
Separate your thoughts into three categories: professional, personal and family/friends. Having these three categories will help you think in the various aspects of your life with a clear thought process.
Reflect on the past year. What did you do in 2015 that helped your career? Did you have a health goal that you hit and you’re proud of? Did you re-connect with old friends or meet new ones? What did you do that helped you develop as a person? Jot down what you did that you are proud of, what you wish you would have done, what you could have done and what you wish you didn’t do. Try not to think of this as an exercise to dwell in the past, but to learn and grow in the future.
Now that you have thought about your past, what do you want to take with you or change for the future? Reflect on yourself as a person and who you want to be in the years to come, what can you do now that will help you develop into the person you want to be? Try not to make more than three main goals, stick with one for each of the three categories. Be realistic and write down what you think you can aim for in a year.
How will you reach these goals? Take your three goals that you want to accomplish and write them down on a separate piece of paper. How will you accomplish these goals? What will you do every day, week, and month in order to do this? Write it down and tape it to your bathroom mirror. When you wake up every morning, you will be reminded of your goals and how to achieve them.
Celebrate! You now have a clear and concise view for the next year. Bring in the New Year with your loved ones and look forward to a great 2016. Happy New Year!
